Potted Beef recipe

This simple potted beef dish is ideal for making up on a Sunday to give you something to spread on toast or to fill your sandwiches with in the week. It's economical, but absolutely delicious.


  • 500g beef stewing steak
  • 100g ghee
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tsp. paprika
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Method of Preparation:

  1. Simmer the beef in 1cm of water for around three hours, until very tender. Replace the water as it is needed.

  2. Once cooked, strain the meat, reserving the liquid.

  3. Melt the ghee and mix 3/4 of it with the cooked meat. Season with salt and pepper, paprika, and nutmeg, add the cooking liquid to moisten and stir to combine everything.

  4. Transfer the beef to pots or sterile containers and then pour the remaining melted butter over the top. Place into the fridge until ready to eat.

You can easily do this recipe with other meats too, such as chicken, duck or shrimp. Adjust the amounts of paprika to your own personal tastes. This recipe serves four people.
