Beef Recipe

Portuguese Beef recipe

This spicy beef dish is real traditional Portuguese food at its best. The beef is well cooked and it is so tender it will fall off your fork. It's cooked in orange juice, white wine, crushed chilli flakes, paprika, bay leaves and allspice, and can be served with almost anything - including mashed potato, rice, spaghetti or even on a burger bun.

  • 1kg diced stewing steak
  • 4 tbsp. white wine
  • Juice of three oranges
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 tsp. dried chilli flakes
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 tsp. ground allspice
  • Salt and pepper

Method of Preparation:

  1. Crush the cloves of garlic.

  2. Place the beef in a large bowl. Cover with the orange juice, white wine, oil and chilli flakes. Add the bay leaves, crushed garlic, paprika, allspice, salt and pepper.

  3. Mix well to coat, cover with cling film and put into the fridge overnight.

  4. Heat a saucepan over a medium heat. Place the meat and marinade into the saucepan and simmer for an hour to two hours or until the meat is very tender. Alternatively, place the beef and marinade into a casserole dish and put into a low oven for three or four hours, stirring regularly.

  5. Remove the bay leaves to serve.

A lovely way to serve this would be with a little bit of sour cream flavoured with chives and seasoning, with a flat pasta such as tagliatelle - but you can serve it however you like. This recipe serves six people.
