American-Style Shredded Beef recipe

Americans sure know how to make simple yet delicious food and this shredded beef recipe is no exception. Beef combines with wine and passata and is flavoured with garlic, Tabasco and paprika before being shredded and dressed in the cooking juices. Try serving it in floury tortilla wraps with shredded lettuce, or spoon it over boiled white rice or fettucine pasta.

  • 2kg top rump beef roasting joint
  • 400ml red wine
  • 2 tbsp. Tobasco
  • 250g passata
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tbsp. smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper

Method of Preparation:

  1. Place the meat into a slow cooker.

  2. Crush the garlic cloves with a garlic mincer. Mix the garlic, paprika and Tobasco into the passata, stir in the red wine and season well.

  3. Pour the liquid over the meat in the slow cooker, cover with the lid, set the heat to low and cook for eight or nine hours.

  4. Once cooked, remove the beef from the cooker and shred it with two forks.

  5. Pour the cooking juices over the beef. If it is a little too thin, thicken it in a saucepan over the heat with some corn-flour and water.

  6. Serve.

A lovely way to freshen up the beef before serving it is to finely chop some spring onions and fresh coriander and sprinkle both over the beef. A little creme fraiche over the top would also be delicious, as would a sprinkle of smoked paprika. This recipe serves 16.
